Addressing Nickel MRL in the European Union

SAPPA would like to inform all stakeholders that we are acutely aware of the European Union’s current restrictions on nickel Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs), and the implications these have for the South African pecan industry.

The EU has recently enforced stricter limits on the permissible levels of nickel in food products, including tree nuts. While these regulations aim to enhance consumer safety, they pose a potential barrier to market access for pecan exports, particularly in cases where naturally occurring nickel levels in soil may contribute to higher readings in pecan kernels.

Please be assured that SAPPA is actively engaged on this issue. We are currently lobbying for two critical objectives:

1. Dispensation for 2025 South African Pecan Products
   We are in dialogue with EU regulatory bodies to seek a temporary dispensation or tolerance for current pecan exports, recognizing that elevated nickel levels may result from environmental conditions rather than agricultural practices.
2. Revision of the MRL Threshold
   SAPPA is advocating for a scientific review of the current ppm (parts per million) limits set for nickel in tree nuts. We aim to support efforts to raise the MRL to a level that is both scientifically justified and realistic for naturally occurring elements in agricultural produce.

We are working in coordination with international bodies, local researchers, and food safety experts to compile relevant data and support our position. Your continued cooperation in monitoring, documenting, and sharing any relevant findings will be invaluable as we present our case.
