India has the largest population in the world with 1.451 billion people. With +-30% of their population being vegetarian as well as daily consumers of Nuts and Dried fruit. India’s middle class is growing at an exceptional rate; the growth is fuelled by rising incomes and is expected to reshape India’s consumer market. Currently India is still a small buyer of pecans, pecan volumes are expected to be +-200 metric tonnes. However, USA is allocating lots of money to develop India into pecan consumers by various marketing campaigns.

Hemal Haria Co owner of Indian Dryfruits Traders reached out to SAPPA back in December 2024.

After initial discussion we arranged for a sample of kernels to be sent to India. Hemal and Karan his son was really impressed by the Choctaw Kernel sample they received. India prefers large nuts therefor making our Choctaw nuts perfect for this market.

They are currently importing pecans from USA, the idea is to source pecans from USA for 6 months and then to buy from South Africa for 6 months ensuring they can supply their customers with the freshest pecans. Currently both USA and South Africa have a 33% import tax to India.

According to the Indian Embassy we have a Plant Quarantine Protocol in Place with India which will allow us to sell the Pecan kernels to India. For now, the market demands kernel product, however this may change in the future to In-shell. Currently India cracks and process walnut in-shell.

Karan decided to meet some of the processors first hand during the week of 28th of July to the 30th of July. Cobus van Rensburg met him at the Upington Airport, from there they travelled over the next three days to meet with: Redsun, Karsten, Empire Pecans, Vaalharts Pecan Marketing, SA Pecans, Pekanhoek and Bester.

During his trip we were able to introduce him to our processors, showed him our excellent factories, harvesting of pecans as well as hedging of the orchards.

We are excited to be part of the pecan growth in the Indian market. We are privilege that they want to do business with Pecans from South Africa.
