Transformation in Action: Growing Orchards, Growing Dreams
By Fhatuwani Nemvumoni – Nemvumoni Farms (Pty) Ltd
Nemvumoni Farms (Pty) Ltd was established in 2018 by myself, Fhatuwani Nemvumoni, and my sister, Elelwani Nemvumoni. Our farm is located in the Loubad region of Modimolle, on Portion 17 of Farm Buffelsfontein, covering 43 hectares.
We were born in Thohoyandou and raised in Polokwane. I am a qualified Civil Engineer (BSc – UKZN, MEng – Stellenbosch University), and my sister is a Quantity Surveyor (BTech – NMMU).
Our passion for agriculture began when we took over the management of our father’s farm in Levubu. The farm, which primarily had macadamia orchards, gave us hands-on experience as we worked to turn it around and make it profitable. To complement the macadamias, we also planted crops such as peppers, butternuts, and okra.
In 2018, we were fortunate to purchase our own piece of land in Modimolle. To generate initial income, we started with dryland watermelon production and later added maize and cabbages after installing an irrigation system.
From the outset, our long-term vision was to establish orchards. In 2021, we consulted with Ivan Otto to assess the suitability of the area for pecan farming. Based on his guidance, we planted our first 7.5 hectares of pecan trees in 2023, using a 6x12m spacing (±139 trees/ha). In 2024, we planted another 7.5 hectares and are currently preparing the next block of 7.5 hectares. SAPPA generously supported us with 250 trees during the first two planting phases. With Ivan Otto’s continued guidance, we have experienced a high survival rate in our young orchard.
We are deeply drawn to the longevity of pecan trees and the idea of investing in something that can provide for generations. Our goal is to continue expanding our orchards and growing a legacy rooted in our love for agriculture.
