Sharing the harvest: Help us track Cape Parrots in pecan orchards By Dr Francis Brooke,…

Taking Hands Mexico
According to the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC), Mexico produces around 45% of the world’s pecans. They currently have approximately 150 000ha of pecan plantings, of which 75% is in production. Mexico and the USA are undoubtedly the largest players in the pecan industry.
Sappa recently had an online meeting with Mr. Arsenio González, the director of Real Torio and president of the Mexican Pecan Council. Although the future for pecans looks promising, Mexico is facing similar challenges to those in South Africa. The country is also facing an off season this year.
Mexico has been experiencing severe droughts, which have significantly impacted pecan production. Additionally, high input costs, expensive borrowing capital, and low kernel prices have squeezed profit margins.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Mr. González sees huge potential in the local Mexican pecan market. With a population of 127.5 million and favourable consumer trends, the possibilities are endless. Mexico is focusing on stimulating local pecan consumption. Their campaign, “El Poder de la Nuez” (Power of the Pecan), highlights the benefits of consuming pecans and primarily uses social media platforms for marketing.
Pecan consumers often lack sufficient information about the various uses and proper storage of pecans. Educating them on how to incorporate pecans into their diets and the best methods for storing them is crucial. For example, storing pecans in the freezer is highly recommended.
We face similar challenges in the pecan industry and we believe that working together is essential. SAPPA is excited to collaborate with the Mexican industry, sharing information, and learning from each other.
